Diablo 2
Diablo II has included crude language, but what really brings it down is the very disturbing imagery that doesn’t add to the game at all and could have been left out. In most of the levels you will walk past some sort of person who has been brutally killed and mutilated. The blood and gore is prevalent in Diablo II. Really it’s more the added background imagery of murdered or tortured people than the actual meaningful game play. If you choose the necromancer, your specialty is raising skeletons and golems from the ground and you can even raise those that you have killed from the dead to fight for you. Being the sorceress you have the ability to cast spells to harm others and heal ones self. Magic is one of the features of Diablo II that stands out. Every character class you may play in the game is able to do some sort of magic. From casting spells such as fire, lightning, and ice, to defensive and offensive auras. Many of the women in the game are not modestly dressed at all, which is another reason why this game is a poor choice to play. The quality graphics don’t outweigh the evil in Diablo II and should not be a choice for Christian gamers.
Doom 3
As a twenty-one year old, I have to say I was freaked out, disturbed, and completely horrified by Doom 3’s content. Besides the dark imagery, blood, gore, and violence, there is also quite a bit of vulgar language in Doom 3. I can’t imagine what a thirteen year old child would feel like playing this game. After the hours of exposure needed to beat this game, I could see a child’s attitude and personality change because of this game. If you needed a reason to listen to the ESRB’s 17+ rating you have it. I really don’t see any valuable aspect in playing Doom 3. It literally eats away at you spiritually and really sucks you dry. Most games have some sort of multiplayer aspect that is incredibly appealing, but Doom 3 has almost nothing in that category with capping the players to server to only four (fixed in a mod) you can’t have much fun playing this with your friends. I would highly recommend that anyone who professes themself as a Christian, not play this game.
GTA: Vice City
It’s hard to know where to begin, when it comes to the objectionable content in GTA Vice City, but I’ll just start with the name and go from there. Grand THEFT Auto, if you didn’t already guess, the point of the game is to steal cars, but we haven’t even brushed the surface on the content that GTA Vice City contains. First, you are required to kill just about everything and everyone in the game. It is not essential to run down all those innocent people walking the sidewalks, but hey, they are just walking around so why not? In fact, you'll be rewarded by way of money and weapons for doing so. (see Prov. 6:16) There are also certain guns lying around that when picked up send you into a “killing spree”. In its most basic explanation: you have a set amount of time to shoot, blow up, and cause havoc upon everything in your path. Let's just say there is a bit of blood-shed here. Also the character you play is your average thug, required to lie, cheat, and do anything necessary to get cash, pay off debts, and earn respect on the streets, not to mention, breaking the law is a given. Right off the bat you can tell this is not the best game in the world, and I can go on.
GTA Vice City is loaded with graphic violence and blood; you can even keep kicking dead bodies to your hearts content as blood splatters on the ground. There is plenty of foul language to go around, including some four letter words. In the lines of nudity and sexual content, there are prostitutes lining the sidewalks and at street corners just waiting for your business- you can acquire their services upon request.
So, to put it in a nut-shell, GTA Vice City doesn’t promote any good social behaviors. In fact there is more objectionable content in Vice City than positive things to say. Because of the major content issues contained in Vice City, I can’t recommend this game to anyone and it definitely belongs back on the shelf where you saw it. "A fool finds pleasure in evil conduct..." -Proverbs 10:23 NIV
Halo
There is no nudity contained in Halo, in fact the hero never even takes off his armor; however, with many uses of profanity, such as using hell out of context and the word “damn” and frequent dialog using Lord’s name in vain, Halo may have strong graphics, but this type of language is unacceptable.
Laser Squad Nemesis
LSN surprisingly contained some swearing, which seems out of place compared to the rest of the games language. Some language used includes mild euphemisms such as crap, use of the world hell, and a title of one campaign called b**ch fight.
Soul Calibur 2
As with many games, the clothing on the women is on the skimpy side. Most clothing sported by the characters resembles a cheerleading outfit, but there are some occasions where a midriff will be seen or a rather scanty outfit such as the one worn by the character, Ivy. The men, in SCII, also try for a more sexual appeal, many having a secondary outfit where they wear no shirt. The ESRB picked up on SCII’s suggestive themes. This should be a red flag for parents with younger children who wish to play such a game.
The Punisher
There is a very hefty amount of vulgar language and swearing throughout The Punisher. Crude imagery of people dying is everywhere as you take the law into your own hands. Blood and gore is also seen throughout the game as people are often shot and lose limbs. There is a direct violation of the Ten Commandments, when God's name is used in vain and all the murder. The entire intent of the game is evil, in the case that The Punisher is trying to kill everyone that is involved in crime. There is even alcohol usage, which should come as no surprise.
The Punisher takes the law into his own hands, killing anyone he decides deserves death. His motive is revenge and so the killing reflects this bitterness with vivid, graphic violence that includes images of torture. Given the excellent gameplay and high quality graphics, the game has the potential to deceive the player and make evil look pleasurable; however, as Christians, we are called to guard ourselves from such content.
Unreal Tournament
Even if you look past the blood and gore there are still some issues with Unreal Tournament. There is a feature called auto taunt, which will make your character say something after each kill. (another word for kill) Some of the taunts can get out of hand and use language that is not appropriate. This feature can be turned off but, it would have been no loss to have left it out of the game completely.
The woman’s clothing is not very modest in the game, making such a good game spiral in a downward fall. It’s things like the partial nudity and offensive language that could be removed from games without being missed, that would help make the game more appropriate for Christian gamers. It is nice to see that you are able to turn off the objectionable language, but, it really could have been omitted entirely.
